Mobile Payments Simplify Transit for the City of Phoenix Ahead of Major Sporting Event

From today, 1 Feb 2023, Valley Metro riders are now able to pay for and access transit via their mobile phone, simplifying network access ahead of an expected increase in ridership in less than two weeks, when the City of Phoenix hosts the NFL final.

With the game fast approaching, Vix was challenged with a compressed timeframe to build, pilot and deploy the mobile ticketing solution across the transit network. As part of a phased rollout, and in partnership with ICM Mobility Group sister company Unwire, today marks the launch of the Valley Metro app, which enables riders to purchase fares at their own convenience prior to riding. The app also provides real time journey information and planning, as well as displaying a QR code that enables users to scan their pass at on-platform and on-board validators.

Vix was selected by the City of Phoenix and Valley Metro, the region’s transit providers, to implement a new advanced fare collection (AFC) system for public transit back in 2020, ultimately moving the transit networks from a cash and paper-based ticketing system to an account based, contactless fare collection platform, providing passengers with frictionless regional travel on bus and light rail (and future streetcar).

The fare solution is built on Vix’s fourth-generation fare collection platform, Vix Pulse, an innovative multi-modal, multi-operator, fare collection platform that unifies account-based ticketing and contactless payments into a single, secure platform that is easy to operate and manage.

Vix Technology is not an official sponsor of the NFL.
