Real Time Information For All – A Detailed Look Into The Real Time Battery Displays Delivered For Leicester

Join our Business Development Manager, Matt Wilks, as he shares key insights from his Quality Bus 2023 presentation on “Real-time Information for All” and provides a detailed look into the implementation of real-time battery displays for Leicester.

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of attending Quality Bus 2023! Alongside local authority leads, industry professionals, government officials, and fellow technology providers, our team enthusiastically showcased our solutions and immersed ourselves in the latest advancements in public transportation.

I was privileged to present a case study on “Real-time Information for All” and the Leicester real-time totems on Day 2 of the event. The presentation aimed to shed light on the transformative impact of real-time information, revolutionising the passenger experience in Leicester and the county.

Let’s dive into the key aspects covered in my presentation:

Our Role in Leicester’s Transit Upgrade:

  • Installation of 1,400 RTI and non-RTI displays.
  • Bringing real-time technology to transit users with up-to-the-minute real time information.
  • Delivered a consistent, easily identifiable brand and aesthetic appeal to the bus stop infrastructure.
  • Accomplished the initial project of 575 displays within the initial 12-month; on time and on budget, showcasing our commitment to efficient and effective solutions.

Addressing Passenger Needs:

  • Responding to changing transit user needs is pivotal to ensuring Local Authorities fully address the bus users needs with the ultimate goal of increasing bus patronage.
  • 36% of Leicester survey respondents check journey information at the stop, with 43% using real time displays, showcasing the significant reliance on this information.

Customer Satisfaction levels:

  • We conducted a comparative analysis of information satisfaction in Leicester through collaboration with passenger focus surveys, bus user, and bus accessibility groups to inform strategies to improve passenger experience.

How We’ve Transformed Passenger Experience:

  • Sleek displays revolutionise engagement with a modern, consistent look and branding critical to Leicester’s totem infrastructure.
  • Alignment with the broader bus network branding creates a standout, easily identifiable bus stop identity.
  • Real-time information empowers commuters, reducing uncertainties, and enhancing overall journey satisfaction.

Achieving Design Cohesion:

  • Understanding Passenger Behaviour helps us recognise how users interact with existing stop information.
  • Importance of Clear Displays is important for easy comprehension.
  • Coordinating infrastructure for an easily identifiable and enjoyable journey.

User Feedback and Positive Impact:

  • Positive responses to RTI totems: Significant increase in user satisfaction, with 83% rating stops as fairly good or very good, surpassing the national average of 77%.
  • Tangible improvement: Post installation, 74% of users find information fairly or very good, up from 71%, exceeding the national average of 70%.
  • Encouraging informed decisions: Enhanced passenger experience and reduced waiting times.

As I reflect on our time at Quality Bus 2023, the encouraging responses to our innovations underline how technology is reshaping the future of public transportation. The real-time totems in Leicester have transformed the way people engage with bus stops, providing easy access to information, cutting down wait times, and elevating overall satisfaction. These strides represent a promising journey toward a connected and passenger-centred future for public transportation.
